New species of coral discovered off Marin County coast


MARIN COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — Scientists exploring the deep ocean waters off the Marin County coast have discovered a new species.

It is a yellow coral simply three inches tall, that’s been named Chromoplexaura cordellbankensis.

The species of coral was first noticed in 2004 close to Level Reyes Nationwide Seashore. Nevertheless it was left untouched.

Final yr, a research staff with the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco found it once more and brought it up to the floor.

Scientists put it underneath a microscope and found it was totally different from some other coral species.

The invention was revealed this week in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences.
